The Shelter of Flint and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint are working together to provide summer and after school activities to children 7-17 years of age. The Boys & Girls Club has donated $1,000 to the Shelter to be used to transport kids to the Club during the summer program. At the Boys & Girls Club Summer Program children take advantage of a full gym, playground, library, art room, teen room, workout room, garden, and field trips every Friday.

The Shelter believes in providing children an opportunity to play and learn in a safe environment. That is why, with the generous help of the Boys & Girls Club, children in the Shelter's program get a yearlong membership to the Club with no charge. The Shelter looks forward to their continued relationship with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint.

The Shelter is proud to provide after school tutoring and activities to the children in the program. The Genesee Intermediate School District has provided the Shelter with educational supplies and a tutor. After school the children receive homework assistance from the tutor. If a child is behind in their school work the tutor will provide assistance. There are several after school activities with the children, including literacy training and art projects.

During the summer the Shelter of Flint gives children the opportunity to learn how to swim. At the Rosewood Park Apartments children learn to swim with lifeguards from the YMCA. After the swimming lessons children are provided a free lunch and participate in an art activity, including music. Returning this year, thanks to a grant from the Ruth Mott Foundation, Flint's own Bangtown Productions will teach children how to create music with professional musicians. Children will create their own beats, lyrics, and sing them to create a CD at the end of the summer. These activities not only provide children a little break from the summer heat, they teach self confidence, team work, and literacy.

New this year is adult swimming lessons. Adults are taking advantage of this opportunity for free swimming lessons.

The Shelter of Flint is proud to continue their relationship with YMCA's Camp Copneconic and send needy children to summer camp for free! These children have never been to a camp before. While at the camp they will learn about nature and team work while in a relaxing environment, away from loud technology and city life.
