For many
clients at Shelter of Flint, the agency's Outreach Program is a lifeline
to attaining and sustaining independence. This process begins at the
point of a client's intake, and continues through their journey into
permanent community housing.
- ASSESSMENT: Each client
at Shelter of Flint takes part in an Outreach assessment, which includes
an evaluation of family size, available income, education level,
vocational and housing goals, and personal circumstances. Armed with this
information, the client and their case manager determine the most
appropriate means for successfully meeting the client's individual needs.
- EDUCATIONAL
& VOCATIONAL: Addressing educational and employment needs is critical to
the development of independence and security. Recognizing this,
the Outreach program offers workshops on the establishment of related
goals and development, pertinent skills, including how to complete
applications and resumes, presenting a winning interview, and effective
socialization in the work place. Staff also help clients identify
and follow through on employment and educational opportunities.
- SUPPORT
GROUPS: Weekly Outreach meetings provide clients with
information on a wide range of pertinent housing topics, including
budgeting, nutrition, landlord/tenant rights, etc. These meetings
are open both to clients residing at the Shelter and those in the
community. For the latter, group is not only a learning
experience, but also an opportunity to touch base with an ever important
support system.
- HOUSING:
The Shelter of Flint works closely with area landlords and realtors in
developing leads on safe affordable housing, both for our own clients
and those of other area agencies. Staff accompany clients to view
available housing and assist in the evaluation of potential sites.
Client advocacy is provided in the procurement of rent and security
deposit funds, acquisition of home furnishings, and on the issue of
landlord/tenant rights.
- HOME VISITS: One of
the most critical components of the Outreach program, home visits provide
staff the opportunity to assess within a client's home their progress
towards housing and family stabilization, and the chance to offer
additional assistance when necessary. This proactive measure helps ensure
that possible problems are effectively resolved before they lead to a
return to homelessness.
Many Shelter of
Flint clients attribute their progress towards long-term independence to
the support of the agency's Outreach program. For them, Outreach
staff are true friends, not just for now, but for the future as well.
